DYNAMIC IP ADDRESSES (DHCP OBTAINED) FOR MOUNTAIN
SKY SCHOOL
- Dynamic IP addresses will be used for all the rooms requiring
connection to Mountain Sky's LAN this meaning all curriculum
computers. These IP addresses will be obtained dynamically from
Mountain Sky's DHCP server with the IP address: 192.168.188.2 subnet mask:
255.255.252.0 (/22)
- DHCP server has been specifically placed on the same VLAN3 as the
curriculum computers that it services
- For Mountain Sky's dynamic IP addressing a class B private network
192.168.0.0 is used, subnetted , so that 62 maximum usable subnets are
created. From these 62 subnets only 46 will be used as we have 46 rooms
that require connections.
- So for 62 subnets we will use 6 bits for subnet portion of the address,
and 2 bits for hosts portion:
- 6 bits for subnet
- 2 bits for hosts
- basic network address: 192.168.0.0
- subnet mask: 255.255.252.0 (/22)
- subnets created: 192.168.4.0, 192.168.8.0 ...
192.168.248.0 - 62 subnets
- subnets used: 192.168.4.0, 192.168.8.0 ...
192.168.184.0 - 46 subnets
- one more subnet will be used for router
ethernet interface address for VLAN3 and DHCP server address, also located
in VLAN3 - subnet 192.168.188.0
- Detailed dynamic addressing scheme for every building:

- Subnetting and VLANs for each room are used to avoid problems like broadcast storms to affect all
hosts on network, while DHCP is used to avoid problems like one curriculum
computer's accidental change of IP address of affecting some other
computer in another room
- We have created more VLANs on switches and on the router each subnet is
assigned using sub-interfaces on the Ethernet2 interface. |
